Dr O'Shea is a former Associate Professor at Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand. He has published extensively on the systematics and life histories of cephalopods (octopuses and squids), cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and conservation, and has expert knowledge of marine invertebrate systematics, taxonomy of Cephalopoda, biogeography, sea-bed soft-sediment ecology, cetacean ecology, marine conservation, intertidal, subtidal and deep-sea ecological surveys and the effects of aquaculture/mariculture on the receiving environment. Additionally he has been involved in numerous documentaries for both National Geographic television and the Discovery Channel relating to conservation research and his ongoing quest to find and film the giant squid alive. Dr O’Shea joined the Edanz Group as an editor in 2014.
