2013 - PhD Chemical Biology, Harvard University
2005 - BS Biochemistry, University of Michigan
Academic Background
Dr Carlson received his BS in Biochemistry from the University of Michigan where he also worked as a lab technician studying the biosynthesis of natural products from marine-derived microbes. He then trained in molecular biology and chemical biology at Harvard University where he earned his PhD for developing a system for in vivo continuous directed evolution. He has also undertaken post-doctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of California - San Francisco, where he used microendoscopic calcium imaging in mice to study the neural basis for thermoregulation. He is broadly knowledgeable across many scales of biology (chemical, molecular, cellular, organismal) and has a passion for communicating scientific ideas using language that is efficient and engaging.
Publishing History
Dr Carlson has written successful funding proposals and has published in Nature, Nature Chemical Biology, Nature Chemistry, and ChemBioChem.
Editing and Reviewing Experience
Dr Carlson has been an editor and reviewer of manuscripts, grants, and theses for colleagues at his institutions. He has also served as a journal scientific reviewer. He joined Edanz as a freelance editor in 2023.
