Dr O'Rourke performed biomedical research for more than 20 years before becoming a full-time writer and editor. She spent 15 years in academia, and worked as an Assistant Professor at The Scripps Research Institute in California. During this time, her work focused on the molecular and cellular events underlying lymphocyte activation. She then worked for 9 years in the biotech industry, where she led research groups developing small molecule and biologic therapeutics for autoimmune diseases and cancer. Dr O'Rourke has published more than 30 articles in top-tier journals, including Nature and Science, and has presented her work at conferences worldwide. She has extensive experience in biochemistry, immunology, autoimmunity, oncology, and drug discovery, both as a hands-on researcher and as an editor. She has been a professional editor for 5 years and has edited manuscripts and grants on biomedical topics ranging from C. elegans to cystic fibrosis. Dr O’Rourke is a member of the American Medical Writers Association and the Council of Science Editors. She joined Edanz Group as an editor in 2015.
