    After obtaining an Honors degree in Biochemistry at Oxford University, Dr Blakytny went on to gain his DPhil in the field of ophthalmology in developing a model system to test potential anti-cataract drugs. He subsequently investigated the protein biochemistry of the lens. During this time, he was a reviewer for the journal Experimental Eye Research. In 1996, he joined Prof Mark Ferguson at the School of Biological Sciences at Manchester University, UK, to work on wound healing in diabetes. Further positions included research on chaperone protein biochemistry in the UK and Sweden, and on wound healing and musculoskeletal function, including fracture healing and osteoporosis in Germany. After over 20 years of research experience, Dr Blakytny has worked as a freelance editor and medical writer for both academia and the pharmaceutical industry since 2009. He has extensive editing experience in the fields of ophthalmology, dermatology, musculoskeletal function and repair, hematology, and diabetology, as well as in traditional Chinese medicines related to these fields.

    Publishing History

    Dr Blakytny has more than 40 peer-reviewed publications in journals, including Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, Biochemical Journal, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, Bone, Clinical Biomechanics, Experimental Eye Research, International Journal of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, International Journal of Lower Extremity Wounds, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Biomechanics, Journal of Cellular Physiology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Immunology, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, Journal of Pathology, PLoS One, Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Additionally, he has presented at 18 major meetings throughout Europe and in the USA.

    Editing and Reviewing Experience

    After editing papers and abstracts for colleagues while working at the University of Ulm, Germany, Dr Blakytny began freelance editing from 2009 of research papers, reviews, abstracts, cover letters, point-by-point replies, grant applications, and letters of recommendation. During 2010–2019, he was responsible for the editing of all English abstracts of the German-language veterinary journal Tierärtzliche Praxis. Dr Blakytny joined Edanz as an editor in 2012.

    Writing Experience

    Dr Blakytny has written pre-clinical reports, papers, and abstracts related to drug pharmacology and toxicology for Ferring Pharmaceuticals A/S and pre-clinical reports for BioNTech on RNA treatment for cancer. Additionally, he has written industry-related White Papers on test kits and analytical systems for Siemens and prepared commercial material on negative-pressure wound therapy for Paul Hartmann AG.
