    Academic Background

    Ms Penner has a graduate degree in microbiology and biotechnology, and more than 10 years of experience working in the oil sands industry, where she studied the geochemical and water chemistry aspects of establishing best practices for oil sands reclamation. She is knowledgeable in microbiology, chemistry, geochemistry, hydrocarbon degradation, molecular genetics, and environmental science. She also developed and instructed a graduate level course entitled “Technical Communications for Engineers” at the University of Alberta from 2021 to 2023.

    Publishing History

    Ms Penner has authored seven papers, three as first author, in journals such as Environmental Science and Technology, Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, Canadian Journal of Microbiology, and Virus.

    Editing and Reviewing Experience

    Ms Penner has an Editing Certificate from Simon Fraser University and more than 6 years of experience editing scientific journal manuscripts and grant applications, mainly written by ESL academics. She has edited for researchers in the fields of environmental geochemistry, environmental engineering, and anaerobic hydrocarbon degradation. She joined Edanz as an editor in 2019.

    Writing Experience

    Ms Penner has written numerous corporate reports and literature reviews on the topic of oil sands reclamation. She has authored manuscripts on the use of pit lake technology in the oil sands mining industry, and recently co-authored a review article on betaretrovirus and liver disease which was published in Virus.
