2021 - PhD Neuroscience, University of Strasbourg
2015 - Masters Biomedical Science, University of Glasgow
2014 - BSc Neuroscience, University of Glasgow
Academic Background
Dr Gardner is a biomedical neuroscientist whose research has touched on various aspects of the pathophysiology and treatment of mood disorders. His PhD thesis explored the mechanistic and therapeutic effects of deep-brain stimulation in models of depression, and his post-doctoral work focused on how sleep and circadian factors contribute to and are affected by such disorders. His work has utilized various techniques including cellular and molecular biology, genetic manipulations, stereotactic surgery, electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and histology. His broader scientific expertise and interest extend to general neuroscience and biomedicine, topics he teaches as part of an interdisciplinary English-language Bachelor's degree program at the University of Freiburg, Germany.
Publishing History
Dr Gardner has co-authored several peer-reviewed papers, including a co-first-authored article recently accepted for publication in Nature Communications. A further paper from his most recent post-doctoral work is in preparation for submission to Neuron. He has presented his work at various international conferences including the meetings of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies, the French and German Neuroscience Societies, the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, and the World Sleep Congress.
Editing and Reviewing Experience
Dr Gardner frequently reviewed, proofread, and edited manuscripts for colleagues and students throughout his PhD and post-doctoral positions. Since leaving full-time research in early 2024, he has been providing writing and editing services for academics and students, helping to improve the grammar, logical flow, conciseness, and clarity of their manuscripts. Dr Gardner joined Edanz as an editor in 2024.
