2007 - PhD Palaeontology and Geology, University College London
2003 - MSc Palaeontology, University College London
2001 - BSc Geology, University of Leicester
Academic Background
Dr Kender is an experienced geoscientist interested in changes to Earth’s climate and oceanography through the Phanerozoic. He researches how these changes have been influenced by orbital, tectonic, and volcanic variations, and how these impacted marine and terrestrial life. Dr Kender’s research has largely focused on microfossil, isotopic, and sedimentological evidence preserved in marine sediment cores to understand environmental and climatic changes across major climate transitions. These include carbon isotope excursions from the Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Paleocene, ice sheet expansions during the Eocene–Oligocene transition, the middle Miocene climate transition, the mid-Pleistocene transition, and Antarctic environmental changes during the last de-glacial.
Publishing History
Dr Kender has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed papers, 13 as first author, in journals including Nature, Nature Communications, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, Journal of Micropaleontology, and Geology. He has presented at numerous international conferences including the American Geophysical Union and the European Geosciences Union.
Editing and Reviewing Experience
Dr Kender has edited manuscripts for both students and colleagues at his institution. He is an Editor for the Journal of Micropalaeontology, has guest-edited an issue of Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, and has been a reviewer for numerous journals including Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Nature Geoscience, and Geology. Dr Kender joined Edanz Group as an editor in 2020.
Writing Experience
Dr Kender has written popular science pieces for NERC Planet Earth and The Conversation.
