Academic Background
Dr Tyson had a research career in plant and microbial biology for 20 years. He has held positions at universities in the UK and USA, in industry, and at a UK government agricultural research institute. His research topics included carbohydrate metabolism (photosynthesis and plant storage compounds), nitrogen and sulfur metabolism, and plant-microbial interactions; he worked on several major crop species as well as model systems. He then moved into science administration and strategy development, working for 15 years for a UK research council (government science funding agency) for biological sciences. He has gained wide experience of the peer review process and further developed his expertise in writing, editing, and proofreading a variety of documents.
Publishing History
During his research career, Dr Tyson has published in multiple international journals, including Science, Plant Physiology, Phytochemistry, Planta, Plant Science, Journal of Applied Bacteriology, and Microbial Releases.
Editing and Reviewing Experience
Dr Tyson has many years of experience editing a range of documents including scientific manuscripts, technical reports, corporate and government documents, press releases, and text for websites. After retiring from full-time employment in 2015, he became a freelance editor and proofreader, mainly for scientific papers. He also has more than 10 years’ experience proofreading classical music programs and publicity materials. Dr Tyson has extensive experience of the peer review process for research grant proposals and has also acted as a referee for papers submitted to several international plant science journals. He joined Edanz Group as an editor in 2018.
