Academic Background
Dr Carlson is an editor with a PhD in cognitive psychology. Her doctoral research examined cross-cultural differences in cognition. Specifically, she investigated whether individual differences in working memory and degree of hemispheric interaction influenced cross-cultural performance on an affordance generation task. She has expertise in cross-cultural psychology, attention and cognitive control, hemispheric activation, categorization, the neurobiology of learning and memory, embodied cognition, and human factors psychology. In addition, Dr Carlson has a particular interest in experimental design and psychometrics. She has contributed to three peer-reviewed publications and presented posters at several international conferences. She has experience with data coding procedures for qualitative and quantitative data and statistical tools such as SPSS.
Editing and Reviewing Experience
Dr Carlson edited papers for colleagues both before and after receiving her doctorate. This sparked an interest in scientific editing, particularly in assisting international authors to prepare for publication. To better equip herself for this role, in 2019 she completed a 4-course copyediting certificate through UC San Diego Extension. Dr Carlson joined Edanz as an editor in 2021.
